WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves has issued an update on his injured shoulder. He will go in for a minor operation today.

Groves dislocated his left shoulder in the last round of his victory over Chris Eubank Jr in Manchester on February 17. That was a World Boxing Super Series semi-final. The final had been scheduled for June 2 at the O2 but Groves will now not be able to meet that date. He however will be fit to fight in July and is lobbying the World Boxing Super Series to shift the date.

Kalle Sauerland, the promoter who is handling the boxing contests in the Super Series, has previously revealed that there is some limited scope to shift the date.

On Monday Groves posted on social media: “Morning boxing fans. This morning I go in for a minor operation on my injured shoulder. The good news is I’ll be fit to fight in the final in July. We will be applying to the World Boxing Super Series for a one month extension and are hopeful of securing this.”

Groves was in Nuremberg at the weekend to confront his next opponent. Callum Smith won the other super-middleweight semi-final, after beating Nieky Holzken on Saturday. He is unlikely to have any objections. A world title bout with Groves is the bout he has craved for a long time and, furthermore, he reportedly had sore hands after his latest fight, which could do with the extra recovery time.
