George Groves explains why Fury-Joshua still makes sense

George Groves explains why Fury-Joshua still makes sense
George Groves.

OLEKSANDR USYK may be this generation’s greatest heavyweight but that shouldn’t prevent Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua from wanting to fight one another, according to George Groves.

The former WBA super middleweight champion turned pundit turned trainer has watched the careers of all three unfold over the years. And after his victory over Fury last month Usyk, 23-0 (14 KOs), now holds a combined four wins over the two Brits.

Fury is in the runner-up spot to Usyk but is he better than Joshua? Groves would like to find out exactly that.

“It’s a logical fight for both guys,” he told Boxing News yesterday.

“I think there’s a lot on the line. Both can now sit back and go okay, Usyk was the best heavyweight of our era but who was better out of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. That will rumble on forever if these two don’t fight each other.

“Both guys have still got more than enough to make it a great fight. They’re not finished, they’re not spent. The loser does take a kick in the nuts for the legacy but the winner gets it all to gain.”

Groves believes Fury, 34-2-1 (24 KOs), and Joshua, 28-4 (25 KOs), could go on to fight three times in total before both hang up the gloves. ‘The Saint’ knows a thing or two about big domestic blockbusters himself but explained why he can’t pick a winner right now between Fury and Joshua should it take place.

“That Dubois performance would have been ageing for Joshua,” he commented. “But also suffering back to back defeats for Tyson Fury [against Usyk] would have been ageing. I don’t know how both guys will come back so I wouldn’t want to pick a winner.”
