Gennady Golovkin will fight Dominic Wade on April 23

Golovkin will face his mandatory challenger ahead of a potential fight with Canelo Alvarez

10th February, 2016

MIDDLEWEIGHT terror Gennady Golovkin will defend his WBA and IBF world titles against unbeaten Dominic Wade at the Forum in California on April 23.

The fight, mandated by the IBF, will serve as an interim contest for Golovkin who intends to face WBC champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who fights Amir Khan on May 7.

HBO will broadcast the fight in America while an announcement on a UK broadcaster is awaited.

“I’m happy to fight again at the Forum in front of my fans and friends in Los Angeles. Dominic Wade is a very hungry and skilled middleweight who is undefeated and will be another big test for me,” Golovkin said.

“Thanks to my Coach Abel Sanchez, my promoter Tom Loeffler, my team, HBO and the Forum for another opportunity to defend my middleweight titles.”

Wade earned his mandatory challenger status by edging past former world champion Sam Soliman on a split decision last year and is relishing the chance to face Golovkin, who most consider the best fighter at 160lbs.

He said: “I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to fight ‘GGG’ for the IBF Middleweight Championship on April 23rd! I’ve worked hard my entire career to get to this point. I’m poised and ready to take on the challenge. I thank my Manager Jerry Vines, and all of my trainers, opponents and supporters for preparing me for this moment.”
