GB Boxing have 11 through to quarter-finals in Samsun, Turkey

ON Tuesday at the Olympic qualification event in Samsun, Turkey, GB’s new welterweight Cyrus Pattinson picked up a great win over Arajik Marutjan, beating the German, who was seeded third in this competition, on a unanimous decision, 29-28 for all three judges.

South Norwood and Victory light-heavyweight Joshua Buatsi has reached the quarter-final, unanimously outpointing Spain’s Alejandro Camacho Fernandez.

Quality Irish middleweight Michael O’Reilly lost a unanimous decision to Finland’s Ilari Kujala, 30-27 and 29-28 twice. Britain’s Antony Fowler beat Moldova’s Valeri Sirbu unanimously to reach the 75kgs quarter-final.

GB 56kgs Qais Ashfaq’s bout was stopped on a cut though he beat Georgia’s Merab Turkadze on a technical decision.

Ireland’s David Olive Joyce won at lightweight, beating Georgia’s Otar Eranosyan on a unanimous decision. GB’s Joe Cordina outscored Hungary’s Miklos Varga winning every round for all three judges.

GB heavyweight Lawrence Okolie won a split decision against Roy Korving from the Netherlands. Darren O’Neill halted Sweden’s Gabriel Richards in a round at 91kgs.

Britain now has 11 boxers through to the quarter-finals at the European Olympic Qualification Event.
