Gavin McDonnell victorious in Doncaster

WITH his proposed Central Area welterweight title bout having been scuppered, Doncaster’s Lewis Booth was forced to make do with a six-rounder at The Dome against Newark’s Fonz Alexander.

It proved a one-sided encounter that with the clock running down looked all set for a shut-out win for the local man – that was until with less than 30 seconds remaining Fonz was tagged coming in and sent to the seat of his shorts.

Alexander, who only seldom visits the canvas, rose with a wry grin on his face as the onlookers cheered before moments later, referee Andy Brook scored it 60-53. 

Also victorious, in an all-southpaw six overseen by the same Leeds official, was local favourite Jason Cunningham, who without ever having to go through the gears dominated by quite a margin against Darlington’s Adam Hutchinson and as expected banked a 60-54 victory.

A scheduled eight between Doncaster’s Gavin McDonnell and Nottingham’s Nathan Kirk was fairly close early on. But once McDonnell settled and stepped it up a notch he dominated increasingly and finished just two seconds shy of the halfway mark in the penultimate session when referee Darren Sarginson decided he had seen enough and called a halt.

Grimsby lightweight Levi Giles, who already has another date in the diary, excelled against Portsmouth’s David Birmingham, flooring him twice in quick succession in the second of a scheduled six and prompting the intervention of referee Sarginson with 23 seconds of the round remaining.

Birmingham suffered a suspected perforated left eardrum.

The evening’s opener, an all-Sheffield affair, saw Sonny Price bank victory number eight against one-fight novice Paul Scaife, who made more of a fight of it late on before going down 40-36 on referee Brook’s card.

There was also a victory by the same score (Darren Sarginson refereeing) for tall Doncaster puncher Jack Roberts against heavier Birmingham opponent Daryl Pearce.  

One final four, increasingly entertaining, saw York novice Cam Shaw eclipse Bradford’s still-winless Jake Pollard 39-37 for Mr Brook. 

The Verdict Home boxers are dominant with just a single round won by the seven visitors.
