Ryan Garcia has offered his view on Terence Crawford‘s recent drama with the WBC super-middleweight title.
‘Bud’ became undisputed champion at 168lbs in September when he successfully stepped up two weight divisions to defeat Canelo Alvarez, earning the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles in the process.
Due to the difficulty manoeuvring each governing body, it is a rare feat these days for a boxer to become the sole ruler of a division and hold on to all four world titles for an extended period of time, and that has proven to be the case once again after the WBC stripped Crawford.
It occurred due to Crawford’s refusal to to pay mandatory fees to the sanctioning body for the Canelo bout, with the WBC stating it gave ‘Bud’ a reduction from 3% to 0.6% on the sanctioning fees for his reported $50 million purse.
Crawford has since responded with a heated message of his own, sending a number of expletives to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, but one man who isn’t impressed with ‘Bud’ is welterweight contender Garcia.
Speaking on the Inside The Ring Show, ‘King Ry’ said that Crawford should have made his stance clear prior to the fight with Canelo.
“He should have talked his talk before. When he needed them, he wasn’t talking like this. Now that he’s got the money, now it’s ‘oh I don’t need the WBC to get an opportunity. Now I’m going to say f**k ya’ll.’ To me that’s a little cowardice on his part.”
Garcia did sympathise with Crawford though on the money that ‘Bud’ would have been required to pay.
“Guess what, only thing I don’t agree with, why’s it $300,000, I don’t like amount.”
Crawford’s next move is currently unknown, while Garcia looks set to challenge for a WBC title himself, with a clash against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios expected for February 2026.
