Tyson Fury has named the former world heavyweight champion that he thinks should have already hung up the gloves.

The man in question is his former foe Deontay Wilder, who was involved in an epic trilogy with Fury that culminated in 2021.

Back then, the American gave a tremendous account of himself – scoring two knockdowns – but ultimately suffered an 11th-round knockout defeat in their third gruelling heavyweight battle.

Prior to that, their second encounter resulted in another punishing loss for Wilder, who has struggled to rediscover his early-career form ever since.

Nevertheless, the former WBC champion has continued fighting and, after claiming a split decision victory over Derek Chisora in April, is now gearing up for a showdown with Jai Opetaia.

The pair will square off at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11, with Opetaia making his heavyweight debut on the undercard of Fury vs Anthony Joshua.

And despite him moving up from 200lbs, many are favouring the former two-time world champion to defeat Wilder, who scored two knockdowns against Chisora but, generally speaking, did not seem to have much of an effect with his notorious power.

Speaking with Michelle Joy Phelps, Fury echoed the general consensus that the 41-year-old is well past his best and ‘should be nowhere near a ring.’

“It’s silly, really, for Deontay’s part. He shouldn’t be in a ring; he should be nowhere near a ring. It’s a dying shame that this man has to continue to fight when he’s shot to bits. He never should’ve fought again after I beat him the last time – that should’ve been the end of it.”

Fury went on to add that Wilder and Chisora looked “shockingly terrible” when they fought earlier this year, while previous defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, too, would suggest that the ‘Bronze Bomber’ is far removed from his prime.
