As Tyson Fury continues to weigh up a return to boxing, ‘The Gypsy King’ has discussed one potential heavyweight dance partner, labelling him as a ‘spent force’.
Fury hung up the gloves earlier this year after suffering consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk when challenging for the undisputed throne, but still British fans remain hopeful that he and long-time rival Anthony Joshua may finally collide.
Like Fury, Joshua has fallen down the heavyweight pecking order, with many believing his best days to be behind him after a devastating defeat to Daniel Dubois last September, but he is set to end a 15-month spell of inactivity in a controversial comeback against Jake Paul.
Speaking to The Ring, Fury revealed his feelings on an all-British scrap with ‘AJ’, both because of Joshua’s poor form and his own personal health.
“He is coming off a highlight reel knockout to a local kid and I’m coming off a debatable decision [loss] to the undisputed champion of the world at the moment.
At the end of the day it is good, for the fans, to give them what they want, but is it really worth my health? I go to these events, and I see a lot of these old-time champions, and some of them get lost in the bathroom. I don’t want to be like that.”
Joshua takes on Paul on Friday, December 19 in an eight-round affair, and Fury is backing the American to knockout Joshua, who he describes as a ‘spent force’.
“I think Jake Paul knocks him out.”
“I think that AJ is a spent force, and I think Jake Paul is on the rise.”
