Fundora-Spence clash edging closer as March date floated
Sebastian Fundora

THE never-ending saga of Sebastian Fundora versus Errol Spence Jr has taken another twist and turn as reports have now emerged suggesting March 29 as the new date. Veteran reporter Dan Rafael has been in communication with a source who is knowledgeable about the saga.

Per source involved, the target date for #FundoraSpence 154 title bout is March 29 to headline a PBC on Prime PPV at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Deal not 100% done yet but if it gets done that is the plan as of now, the source said. #boxing

This fight has been mooted several times and was initially supposed to happen last October in Texas. A combination of sanctioning body politics and date and venue discrepancies have caused a myriad of delays and postponements of a bout that seems destined never to take place.

As October drifted by the wayside, December became a possibility, alongside a Manny Pacquiao vs Mario Barrios double-header. When that didn’t happen, a slot on the Benavidez-Morrell early February card was on the agenda even though the WBO ordered Fundora to defend their title against Terence Crawford.

Speaking of Crawford, he is still chasing a Canelo payday and has only fought once since dishing out a one-sided beating on Spence way back in July 2023. Both men have been incredibly inactive. After losing to Bud, having suffered a near-fatal car accident, the question remains of whether Spence should be fighting on at all.

As for Fundora, he took full advantage of the opportunity presented last March when he stepped in as a replacement opponent to upset a bloody Tim Tszyu over 12 rounds. Holding two of the titles puts him in a strong position. Defeating the likes of Spence would reinforce that further.
