Frank Bruno came up short when he challenged fellow Briton Lennox Lewis for the WBC heavyweight title. Now, Bruno has revealed how he believes Lewis would have fared against fearsome knockout artist and two-time heavyweight champion, George Foreman.
Lewis first claimed the heavyweight throne by overcoming Tony Tucker in Las Vegas, before returning to the United Kingdom for an in-demand first defence of the belt against domestic rival Bruno, in what was the first ever all-British heavyweight title contest.
At the since-demolished National Stadium in Cardiff, Lewis was able to halt his foe after seven competitive rounds of action, marking a third unsuccessful title challenge for Bruno – who was subsequently labelled as a nearly-man by the world of boxing.
However, Bruno would finally get his hands on the WBC heavyweight crown two years later, as he outpointed Oliver McCall in a famous win at Wembley Stadium in the penultimate fight of his career.
These days, Lewis is considered as one of the heavyweight greats after beating every opponent of his career including two avenged defeats. Although, speaking with Clubhouse Boxing, Bruno revealed that he believes Lewis would have failed to trump Foreman, when quizzed on a fantasy fight between the pair.
“George Foreman [would win].”
‘Big George’ first became champion in 1973, and would most notably compete in the ‘Rumble In The Jungle’ against Muhammad Ali before taking a 10-year break from the sport in 1977.
Foreman returned a decade later and would complete his sensational comeback when he knocked out Michael Moorer and reclaimed world honours in 1994, making for one of the most phenomenal boxing careers of all time.
