Former world-rated fighter described as ‘gatekeeper’ by rival camp

“Is he going to win a world title? No, because the division is really, really stacked."

OHARA DAVIES will never win a world title, says the trainer tasked with ensuring his man beats ‘Two Tanks’ on October 19.

Adam Azim will be in the opposite corner to Davies at the Copper Box in London, and his trainer, Shane McGuigan, says Davies is now a gatekeeper of the super-lightweight division.

At a recent media event to announce the fight, Davies tried to get under McGuigan’s skin, but the trainer simply believes that the 32-year-old is easily led.

“He [Davies] tried that the last time, didn’t he, with Josh Taylor and it didn’t really work out for him,” McGuigan told Boxing News. “I think Ohara needs to just focus in on himself. Focus in on himself and he’s getting paid well for it.

“Is he going to win a world title? No, because the 140 division is really, really stacked for Ohara Davies, where he’s at. He can be the guy that’s kind of the gatekeeper and he’s got enough power and enough about him to be in competitive fights with the next generation. Like the Dalton Smiths and Adam Azim and people like that, or even Harlem Eubank coming through, that’s where he’s going to be. And it’s still a good few fights for him. He needs a big win.

“Trying to trash talk or get under people, it’s not even him, it’s [his manager] Lee Eaton and people like that, just getting giddy off trying to get him to wind people up. He’s not a bad kid, Ohara, he’s just easily influenced.”
