Shakur Stevenson is a man that many fighters want to avoid due to his outstanding abilities, but there is one former world champion who is keen for a showdown with the Newark southpaw.
Stevenson became the WBO super-lightweight champion when he claimed Teofimo Lopez’s crown back in January. Then, just days later, he was stripped of his WBC lightweight title, due to unpaid sanctioning fees.
It remains to be seen whether Stevenson will opt to return to his natural 135lb division, remain at 140lbs, or even move up to welterweight, but there is a fight with one lightweight which could be of interest.
As for his old title, former opponent William Zepeda looks set to take on Lamont Roach Jr in a showdown for the vacant WBC lightweight strap, with that bout anticipated to take place in either July or August.
However, despite being set for that fight, former WBA super-featherweight champion Roach told FightHype that he ‘would love’ to take on Stevenson, in what could turn out to be his first defence of the WBC lightweight world title.
“Shakur, one of the best fighters in the world, I would love to get into the ring with Shakur.
“We talked to each other and when it comes to fruition, it will come to fruition, that would be one of the best fights in boxing, I promise you.”
Stevenson has recently been linked to a move to sign with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, which could jeopardise a potential Stevenson vs Roach fight down the line.
