“I gave Canelo my date the other day,” Floyd Mayweather said knowingly after Gervonta Davis’ successful super-featherweight title defence on Saturday (May 20).

Mayweather for years has fought regularly in May and September. As speculation mounts that he will fight UFC star Conor McGregor, speculation which Mayweather increasingly welcomes, as soon as this year, consideration naturally turns to when it might take place. The not inconsiderable matter of Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin on September 16.

“September and May, because I’m Mayweather. Those are my months. May has to be my month because I’m Mayweather. May and September were always my months,” Mayweather mused. He could fight McGregor “maybe even this year. I don’t know yet, I’ll have to talk to my team”.

But he won’t let Golovkin-Canelo affect any of his plans. His representative Leonard Ellerbe said, “No not at all. Those guys, whatever they’re doing, we wish them the best of luck. They’re all great fighters. Floyd Mayweather is on another planet… If he does anything, it’s going to be one thing and that’s that.”

Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather feels perfectly assured in what he has already accomplished, “for generating billions in the sport of boxing, for having a sell out crowd”. Though Mayweather even brought up the question of how his drawing power compares to a certain Anthony Joshua’s. “I was watching the fight with Klitschko and Joshua,” he said. “We didn’t have to have all those hundreds of thousands [in the stadium] to do a 70 million dollar gate. Like I said before, those guys put on a hell of a show. I’m just on another planet.”

He continued, “I did it all. There’s nothing really else I can do in the sport of boxing. Once you get so much money, there’s nothing else you can buy. You buy one jet, you buy another jet, there’s nothing else you can do, you’ve got mansions here, you’ve got mansions there. You can’t live in all those houses, there’s a limit.”
