AT a press conference packed with incident, one of the most surprising revelations of Floyd Mayweather’s current visit to the UK is that he is signing former GB amateur Savannah Marshall.

Marshall, the “Silent Assassin,” is a two-time Olympian, only the second World gold medallist British amateur boxing has ever had and remains the only boxer to have beaten America’s double Olympic gold medallist, Claressa Shields.

Mayweather himself explained why he signed Marshall. “I signed because I’m supposed to sign her. I’m supposed to sign her. She’s remarkable, she’s unbelievable. She’s an Olympian, a champion, she deserves to be with us,” he said.

Marshall could rematch Claressa Shields in a major fight for women’s boxing. Floyd continued, “Everything takes time, everything takes time. We’re not here to talk bad about Shields because she won two gold medals, if I’m not mistaken, and the girl we just signed, she’s the last person to beaten her, if I’m not mistaken. The girl we just signed, she’s a hell of a fighter also. We don’t know what the future holds. We just want to get her out there, get her active, get her busy and hopefully she can become world champion someday.”
