WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO will restart his training camp for Tyson Fury on Monday.
The heavyweight champion had postponed the fight until November 28 after picking up a calf injury. Speaking exclusively to Boxing Newsat the World championships in Doha, Klitschko said, “I’m still in the recovery process and from next Monday I’m in camp.
“I’m looking forward to November 28. Hopefully it’s going to work, with both fighters not getting injured, things like that. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
At 39 years old Klitschko is an elder statesman of the sport. But he insisted he wasn’t thinking about retirement at the moment. “I’ve been asked this question many times in the past two or three years. The discussion’s getting more and more and more. So I understand it’s not forever,” he said. “I’m enjoying myself now. I can’t answer this question.”
He has signed a five-fight deal with his German broadcaster RTL but this appears to be standard. “It’s always a five-fight deal, my contract expired. I’ve been working with this channel, RTL for the past 10 years,” he explained.
There are no indications as to whom he would fight after Tyson Fury, though that contest alone contains plenty of intrigue. Wladimir maintained he hadn’t tired of the Englishman’s antics, even after a surreal press conference that featured Tyson Fury dressed as Batman wrestling with The Joker (aka Hughie Fury).
“I think it’s entertaining. He’s doing the job. He’s Tyson Fury. He’s kind of different to the others. It’s good this way. I don’t think it’s bad. I mean there are some issues that he has, mental, psychological, bi-polarity, all of this. It’s was a little shocking when he said I’m going to go after the referee,” Klitschko said. “I was like, ‘What? Are you serious?’ This is a little too much.”
The champion promises the fight will be a great occasion. “It’s going to be on a big stage in front of 55,000 people,” he said. “Rod Stewart is a warm up right before, so it’s going to be a great night.”
