EXCLUSIVE Peter Fury: Kevin Johnson had no desire, he just fought Anthony Joshua for the money

Tyson Fury’s coach plays down his involvement with Kevin Johnson and says the American was only in it for the money

Peter Fury has revealed his involvement in Kevin Johnson’s training prior to his second round knockout loss to Anthony Joshua and believes the American took the fight only for the money.

In the pre-fight build-up, Johnson revealed he had been secretly training with Fury in preparation for Joshua.

Speaking to Boxing News, Fury explained how much involvement he really had in Johnson’s training and was not too impressed with what he saw.

“He used our facilities and we gave him our advice, but that’s one thing. It’s another thing entirely for someone to employ that advice,” he said.

“When he was in our facility, I didn’t see any desire. He’s just in it for the money and he has gone downhill quite a lot recently.

“Johnson was a great fighter and has seen some great years, but he’s over the hill now, there’s no desire there.”

Johnson, who had previously never been stopped, was heavily dropped in the first round and was somehow allowed to continue.

Joshua set about the American early in the second, dropping him again and the fight was duly waved off.

Despite Joshua’s dominance, Fury insisted he could not draw much from it due to its brevity and also played down talk of a potential clash with his nephew and charge, Tyson Fury.

“I can’t really gauge anything from Joshua’s performance but it was still a good display, he put on the performance he was supposed to against a guy that was over the hill,” he said.

“Joshua is not on Tyson’s radar at the moment, he has the Wladimir Klitschko fight and once he wins that he wants a unification fight with Deontay Wilder.

“If Tyson is successful in those fights and Joshua is still winning, then that fight could happen down the line.”
