“I apologise”: Chris Eubank Jr officially retracts statements from Conor Benn press conference one year on

Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn have shared the ring twice now, but their rivalry has been equally defined by the bitter fallout outside of it.

The score is 1-1 as far as fights go, with Eubank winning the first via unanimous decision and Benn taking the rematch on points convincingly.

Though the first fight was a thrilling affair, the British rivals made just as many headlines for what took place in the build-up – including Eubank slapping Benn with an egg as a nod to his previous failed doping tests.

Eubank subsequently found himself in hot water with the British Boxing Board of Control, being fined £100,000 for the egg stunt. He was also slapped with a £10,000 bill after the fight due to social media posts showing him in a sauna to cut weight. To add to Eubank’s final tally, there was a contractual forfeit of £500,000 for coming in ever so slightly over weight.

Aggrieved, the 37-year-old used his platform at the rematch launch press conference to level various accusations at the BBBofC and Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn.

One year on, and apparently following a potential legal battle behind the scenes, the fighter has now retracted those statements.

”In a press conference held on 17 September 2025 to publicise the forthcoming fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, I made statements about Mr Smith and the British Boxing Board of Control Limited (the “Board”), including that Mr Smith is in the back pockets of Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, had as a consequence tried to ruin my preparation for the fight with Mr Benn on 29 April 2025, and that Mr Smith and the Board have used fines imposed on me to line their own pockets.

“I accept that these statements are untrue and without any foundation. I accept that neither Mr Smith nor the Board are corrupt and I retract my statements in full. I have agreed a settlement of these matters on confidential terms. The parties now consider the matter resolved. I apologise for the harm caused to both Mr Smith and the Board.”

Conor Benn quickly reacted to the social media post with some laughter emojis. The pair have been linked to a trilogy fight since Benn’s devastating KO loss to Ryan Garcia last month.
