CHRIS Eubank Jr will fight Conor Benn once again this year in London.
Ring magazine posted the news on X just before 5pm today to confirm the news that the two Brits will face one another on September 20 in a rematch of one of the year’s biggest match-ups. A venue is still to be announced but the Riyadh Season event will be promoted by Sela, Boxxer (Eubank’s promoter) and Matchroom (Benn’s promoter).
It’s now been two months since Eubank Jr got the better of his fierce rival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The middleweight bout, which saw Benn move up two weight divisions, and Eubank struggle to get down to the 160lbs limit – narrowly missing the weight – turned into one of the fights of the year. Fought at a frenetic pace with machismo replacing defence both men left their all in the ring to enhance the legacy of their surnames.
Eubank-Benn II will once against be set under the same weight rules as last time. The fight will be contested at 160lbs with another 10lb rehydration clause in place for Eubank.
A rivalry which began in 1990 with their father’s fighting for the WBO middleweight title will carry on for a few more months with the rematch now a done deal. The original two-fight series ended at one win for Eubank and a draw between the two, at super-middleweight, in 1993. Chris Jr’s points win in April left the Benn family without a victory against their boxing enemy.
The build-up last time out was tense and boiled over at a press conference when Eubank Jr hit Benn’s face with an egg leading to a furious reaction and melee which threatened to get out of hand.
Talks for a rematch have been ongoing for weeks but their next fight always looked destined to be against one another. Eubank knows that another victory against Benn could land him a shot at undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez if the Mexican can overcome two-weight undisputed champ Terence Crawford on September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
