Vergil Ortiz’s “dream” opponent was ringside on Saturday night to watch him destroy Erickson Lubin in Fort Worth, Texas.
It isn’t Jaron Ennis, though.
Ennis and Ortiz shared the ring afterwards, however, and engaged in some back and forth which has only intensified their rivalry.
Ortiz admitted later that if it were up to him he would fight former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr next. The 35-year-old has been out of action since his chastening defeat to Terence Crawford in 2023. Whether or not the Texas southpaw returns to the ring or not remains to be seen but told Fighthype he was impressed by Ortiz’s win.
“Vergil did good. He did his thing he was supposed to. I don’t know what was going on with Lubin but Vergil did his thing. He [Lubin] felt the power and kinda covered up a little bit.”
Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz will be on many fans’ 2026 wish-list but Ortiz’s comments and those of his manager Rick Mirigan indicate their thought process may be elsewhere.
No stranger to big fights Spence was asked how he sees an Ennis-Oritz showdown going.
“I don’t know. It could go either way. They’re both exciting. For them to fight at this young age it’ll be a great fight.”
