Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr could have one of boxing’s all-time greats in his corner if he decides to return to the ring.
Spence, 28-1 (22 KOs), has been inactive for over two years. The last time fans saw “The Truth” in action was in July 2023, when the Texan southpaw was outclassed and stopped by Terence Crawford in their long-awaited undisputed welterweight title fight in Las Vegas.
Since then, rumours have swirled that Spence may never fight again. However, four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr disagrees. After seeing Spence in Fort Worth on Saturday night, where he watched Vergil Ortiz Jr thrash Erickson Lubin, Jones told Andre Ward’s ATS YouTube channel:
“Imma go out to Dallas to work with him a little bit and I’ll see where he at, see where we can help him get back to it because I do want to see him get back on that horse and ride again. Those fans at that fight at the weekend, they want to see him get back on that horse and ride again.
“He wouldn’t come to that arena if he wasn’t thinking about it. He was lit up in that arena. He loved that fan support. You could tell he was in his element and that made me happier than anything because he was glowing in that element. That means he’s still got it, and he wants to be in that element again.”
Jones admitted he’s comfortable not being Spence’s trainer, but is clearly eager to help the 35-year-old rediscover the form that once made him a three-belt welterweight champion under Derrick James.
