Many fans are presuming that victory for Vergil Ortiz Jr on Saturday night will tee up a highly-anticipated showdown with Jaron Ennis.
Ennis and Ortiz Jr have been continuously linked to a fight with one another in recent years and it was believed that the pair would soon settle the brewing rivalry.
On Saturday night, Ortiz defends his WBC interim super-welterweight title against Erickson Lubin, and ‘Boots’ and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, will be in attendance. Hearn has previously stated they have signed a deal on their side for the Ortiz fight to take place.
As a result, it was presumed that an announcement for Ennis-Ortiz would be made shortly after the main event, providing the latter comes through a serious test in Lubin.
However, Ortiz’s trainer, Robert Garcia, informed Fight Hub TV that he believes Ennis already has alternate plans for his next outing, despite all the talk.
“That’s all bull**it, Boots is not going to fight Vergil next. He [Ennis] is going to show up. but why didn’t they call us up and invite us to his fight two/three weeks ago? He just fought recently, you come to ours, we come to yours and we promote the fight. That would’ve been the perfect idea to do.
“They are going to show up, that doesn’t make a difference, Vergil is going to do his job, but that’s just to get the media and the press to believe that they are ready for the fight. I know they are not [ready]. I know that they already have a date and a possible opponent ready. It’s all part of the show, part of promoting the event, part of promoting his fighter, and Eddie is doing a great job doing it.”
Ortiz-Lubin takes place on Saturday night, supported by an undercard that features Darius Fulghum, Robin Sirwan Safar and Joshua Edwards.
