Ellie Scotney secures undisputed clash on Paul-Davis bill

UNIFIED world champion Ellie Scotney has secured arguably the most pivotal opportunity of her career, as she looks to become the undisputed super-bantamweight queen while featuring on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis.

Her clash with WBA champion Mayelli Flores was announced earlier today, with the pair gearing up to lock horns at the Kaseya Center, Miami, on November 14.

Entering their showdown as a sizable favourite, Scotney, 11-0, comes off a masterful display to outpoint Yamileth Mercado, the then-WBC champion, in July.

While appearing on the all-women’s card, topped by Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3, the Catford woman was, in truth, a touch unfortunate not to claim the performance bonus offered by MVP Promotions.

But still, the 27-year-old nonetheless breezed past her rival in clinical fashion, seizing her third major belt after dethroning prior champions Cherneka Johnson and Segolene Lefebvre with equally dominant victories.

The only woman standing in her way of total superiority at 122lbs, meanwhile, is Flores, 13-1-1 (4 KOs), who claimed her WBA title after edging a split decision against Nazarena Romero in May.

In doing so, the Mexican successfully came through a second stab at world honours after a defeat to Yuliahn Luna Avila, which arrived in 2022, ultimately saw her make a failed attempt at securing the WBC strap.

But regardless of that, Flores is entirely deserving of her opportunity against Scotney, the vastly more accomplished operator, especially after toppling previously unbeaten champion Romero.

As for Scotney, this represents only her second outing under the MVP banner and should, if nothing else, add a degree of credibility to the event headlined by Paul and Davis’ exhibition match.
