Editorial: The rehydration of Floyd Mayweather opens doors to cheats

THREE days before he thrashed Andre Berto with enviable aplomb inside the MGM Grand, it came to light that Floyd Mayweather had rehydrated himself via an intravenous injection containing saline and vitamins hours after weighing in to fight Manny Pacquiao in May.

In all likelihood, Floyd is not a cheater. But the fact that the sport’s leader is allowed to rehydrate like this surely opens doors for those who might be.
And it would seem that the boxing powers that be will ensure the show will go on no matter what – particularly one as huge as Mayweather-Pacquiao. Let’s not forget that the Filipino complained of having an injured shoulder in the days leading up to the richest fight of all time (and was denied a pain-killing injection). If that had been a footballer, they would not have played.
