Don Charles has worked wonders with Daniel Dubois in recent years, guiding ‘Triple D’ to becoming a two-time world heavyweight champion, and the top trainer has now revealed who he believes to be the greatest boxer of all time.

Dubois began his professional career with Martin Bowers as his coach, but he left the Peacock Gym following defeat to Joe Joyce in 2020, working under Shane McGuigan for his comeback the following year.

After a worrying meeting with Kevin Lerena in late 2022, Dubois made the move to work under Charles ahead of his bid for Oleksandr Usyk’s unified heavyweight world titles in 2023.

Whilst he came up short in that contest, Charles played a key role in Dubois’ resurgence, bouncing back with wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic – the latter ultimately earning him the IBF heavyweight title – before dismantling Anthony Joshua in a first defence.

Once again, Usyk proved to be his undoing when they rematched last summer, but Dubois and Charles have since returned to and defended the heavyweight throne, twice knocking out Fabio Wardley to win and then retain the WBO marble.

Dubois now looks like a force to be reckoned with in boxing’s blue-ribbon division and is considered by many to be the best active heavyweight on the planet, but when discussing fighters of years gone by in an interview with Shizzio, Charles named Jack Johnson as the greatest boxer of all time.

Johnson became the first ever black heavyweight world champion when he famously defeated Canada’s Tommy Burns after campaigning for a title shot for many years.

‘The Galveston Giant’ went on to defend his belt against the likes of Philadelphia Jack O’Brien, Stanley Ketchel and James J. Jeffries in his ground-breaking reign as champion, with his career deemed to be amongst the most meaningful of any athlete in sports history.
