AFTER both Zhilei Zhang and Jarrell Miller were mooted as potential opponents, it would now appear that Derek Chisora is gearing up to face a more familiar foe.
The 41-year-old’s 50th professional outing is set to take place on December 13 in Manchester, though a dance partner is still yet to be named for the Queensberry Promotions headliner.
More than a week ago, it seemed that Zhang, who has not fought since his sixth-round stoppage defeat to Agit Kabayel in February, was a likely candidate.
For whatever reason, though, the Olympic silver medallist was then replaced by ‘Big Baby’ Miller as the frontrunner to face Chisora, 36-13 (23 KOs), before the end of this year.
The pair were seemingly in talks to lock horns in Manchester this past February, only for Chisora to collide with Otto Wallin, who he ultimately outpointed, instead.
But now, it would appear that Dillian Whyte, another heavyweight known for failing multiple drug tests, might just fit the bill for what ‘War’ has promised to be his last hurrah in the sport.
Speaking with SunSport, David Haye, who once upon a time managed Chisora, said: “Him [Chisora] and Dillian Whyte are doing a third fight. So I’m looking forward to that sort of Christmas cracker, that one will be.”
Whyte and Chisora went toe-to-toe in a thrilling slugfest, which saw the former claim a somewhat controversial split decision victory, back in 2016.
The two Londoners then squared off in an eagerly-anticipated rematch just over two years later, only this time around, Whyte ended proceedings with a devastating 11th-round left hook.
Since then, though, Whyte has hardly set the world alight with his performances and, more concerning still, it was just last August that he suffered a blistering first-round stoppage defeat at the hands of Moses Itauma.
But if the 37-year-old is, in fact, Chisora’s final opponent, then at least the two largely faded fighters will have a rough idea of what to expect.
