Dereck Chisora says Dillian Whyte deserves world title shot

AFTER suffering a chilling 11th round knockout defeat to Dillian Whyte, Dereck Chisora has said that his London rival deserves a world title shot.

“I’ve said this before. I think Dillian should get his world title shot. When he won the WBC Silver [belt], it’s been two years now. I don’t know why he hasn’t boxed for it but I think he deserves his shot,” Chisora said. “He deserves it but I think everybody wants to see that fight Deontay Wilder versus AJ [Anthony Joshua]. If that happens then you’ve got [Tyson] Fury in the mix as well… Eddie [Hearn, Whyte’s promoter] has to fight for Dillian to fight for a world title.”

David Haye, Chisora’s manager, echoed those sentiments. “After Dillian’s last three fights, Lucas Browne, Joseph Parker and Dereck Chisora, if any of the contenders outside of AJ, Fury and Wilder, I believe he’s proven that he deserves the next shot at a title,” he said. “I can’t see any other heavyweights outside of Dillian right now who deserves a world title shot more than he does. He’s put it on the line. He didn’t have to fight [Chisora] but he did and he did great.”

Whether Whyte can win one is another matter, but Chisora notes, “It’s boxing. Anyone is good enough to win anything.”

Despite his latest loss, Chisora has no plans to retire himself. “Not yet. Getting hit on the chin you’re just going to go on the floor,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, we’ll see… There’s fights out there. It’s not like I lost a terrible loss in a crappy fight or anything like that. It was a great fight. I enjoyed it. I got caught with a left hook and that was it.

“We’ll come back.”

Dillian Whyte vs Dereck Chisora

Dereck blames more having points deducted, for punching low and use of the elbow. Those deductions changed his approach. “I was chasing the fight. My coach told me stay in shape. I just went guns blazing and I caught the wrong end of it,” he said. “My mind just thought I’m down three points… I’m down now. Chase it. That was it.”

“The British public loved it, the fans at home loved it, it was a great fight,” he concluded. “I am upset with this loss I got now? No, I’m not really because when you get knocked out, it’s better than losing on points.”
