In two months’ time, Deontay Wilder hopes to spoil Derek Chisora’s farewell fight with a statement stoppage win. Then, there will be another heavyweight on Wilder’s hitlist, as the American attempts to return to the peak of the division.
Wilder has looked out of sorts in recent fights, unable to land his devastating right-hand, which has been the key factor behind his 43 career knockouts and his reputation as one of the hardest punchers in boxing history.
Yet, the 40-year-old looked bewildered in his last two contests at the elite level, beaten by both Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang and looking a shadow of his former self.
Against Chisora, Wilder has one last chance to mount a charge towards the heavyweight throne and in an interview with Queensberry Promotions, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ admitted that Oleksandr Usyk’s unified heavyweight titles will be his next target, should he dispatch of ‘Del Boy’.
“I don’t see this fight going the distance, I really don’t, it’s impossible. Deep in my heart, [I know] it’s going to be a knockout. His style is designed and made for mine and my style is designed and made for his.
“It really is going to be [about] who lands the most and I am a true one-punch knockout artist.”
“Most definitely, [after Chisora] I am coming for you Usyk. It’s going to be a great fight, push the horses, let’s go baby.”
Wilder-Chisora will take place on Saturday, April 4, at the O2 Arena in London, with Viddal Riley poised to take on EBU European cruiserweight champion Mateusz Masternak in the co-main event of the bill.
Usyk, who has expressed his interest in facing Wilder, has been linked with kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven in the meantime.
