CANELO Alvarez remained resolute over his decision to fight Terence Crawford, despite the fact that he now has three losses on his record. The Mexican, 63-3-2 (39 KOs), is also beltless after Crawford ripped away his titles and undisputed status at super-middleweight.
Crawford boxed superbly for 12 rounds in the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, prevailing by two scores of 115-113 and a 116-112 all in the Nebraskan’s favour.
After losing in the Netflix main event to ‘Bud’, who improved his own slate to 42-0 (31 KOs), Canelo was in a reflective mood, protecting his legacy better than he protected his frame to Crawford’s raiding attacks.
“I’m here to take risks, that’s what I came here for, my legacy is there and I’ll stay here. I’m happy to share the ring with great fighters like him, I’ve achieved a lot in boxing and I’ve taken the risks,” said Canelo.
“I feel good, I feel strong, Crawford was a great fighter, but I feel the same as always. A defeat does not define me, I have already won. I’m happy, it was a great night for me, my career will continue, I’m happy for everything that happened tonight.
“It was a great fight, everyone saw it, I prepared well and we came out winners. The strategy was worked out like that, we did what was planned.”
Where Canelo goes next is open to debate. Despite labelling the Crawford fight as a risk, he was a strong favourite in most quarters to retain the titles, against a man moving up two weight classes to challenge him.
