Oscar De La Hoya has shared his verdict on Conor Benn following his knockout defeat to Ryan Garcia.
The Brit came up short in his first world title shot last month as he was comfortably dispatched of by WBC welterweight champion Garcia inside two rounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
De La Hoya has promoted Garcia throughout his career so is well aware of his talents, and he has explained exactly how he knew it was going to be an easy night’s work for ‘King Ry.’
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya revealed that even though he likes Benn, he doesn’t believe ‘The Destroyer’ is up to the standard of the talent in the US.
“Ryan knocked out Conor Benn the way I expected. People were saying it’s a huge fight. It turned out the way I envisaged it. Benn is a great fighter don’t get me wrong, he’s a good fighter in the UK but there’s a difference when you come fight in the US, it’s a whole different level.
“I love Conor, I think he’s one of the realest fighters out there, I love the way he talks but the Zuffa guys and TKO they don’t know what they were doing. I knew Conor Benn was going to get knocked out in two rounds, three rounds maximum, and that’s exactly what he did.”
Benn is now set to move back up in weight for his next contest, where he has been linked to a trilogy showdown with former rival Chris Eubank Jr.
