Gervonta Davis is set to return to action in the new year and he is now being targeted for what could prove to be the biggest main event of 2027.
‘Tank’ has not won a fight since June 2024, last stepping through the ropes in a controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr in March 2025, with out-of-ring legal issues forcing him to pause his career in the time that has followed.
Davis has now been stripped of his WBA lightweight world title and named as the ‘champion-in-recess’, meaning that he will be granted a shot at the victor of Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi’s vacant world title affair and thus could reclaim world honours in his first fight back.
However, without a belt to his name, fans are pondering whether Davis could instead make a return to the super-lightweight scene or even begin campaigning in the welterweight division, as he seeks fights against the biggest names in the sport.
Speaking on a Kick live stream, WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia revealed that he would prefer a rematch with Davis over one with fellow 147lb champion Devin Haney, seeking to avenge his 2023 defeat to the Baltimore-born knockout artist.
“Which would I prefer Haney rematch or Tank rematch? S**t, both of ‘em. They equally need to get that work, equally bad though.
“I mean, Haney already got his a** real cooked, so you would have to go with Tank if you made a real decision, so probably the Tank rematch.”
Whilst both men appear interested in running it back, Garcia has declared that their second fight would have to take place at welterweight, whilst Davis has previously stated that 140lbs is the highest that he will go to take on ‘King Ry’.
Garcia, however, has recently said there has been contact between the teams to discuss.
