After an extended period away, Gervonta Davis is now in negotiations for a world title defence against an unbeaten rising star.

‘Tank’ hasn’t competed since back in March 2024 when he was held to a controversial majority decision draw in his WBA lightweight title defence against Lamont Roach Jr.

A planned exhibition against Jake Paul last November was cancelled due to external issues for Davis, and that has since led to him being named as champion-in-recess by the WBA.

It was initially reported earlier this year that ‘Tank’ was in discussions for a showdown with former rival Isaac Cruz, but after the Mexican moved on, fans began to wonder whether or not they would actually see the 31-year-old champion from Baltimore back in the ring.

Any concerns may soon be eased, though, after Boxing Scene reported that Davis is in negotiations for a clash against Floyd Schofield. The WBA mandated a fight between the duo and gave them until June 22 to make a deal before calling purse bids.

The report states that officials close to the negotiations are targeting mid-September to early October for the fight to take place.

Schofield is undefeated in 19 and ranked number one with the WBA. He was previously set to challenge for world honours against Shakur Stevenson in February 2025 before he was forced to pull out of the clash on fight week through illness.

Since then, he has claimed a statement knockout win over Tevin Farmer, and his father and trainer, Floyd Sr, has insisted that they want the fight with Davis next and are extremely confident of securing victory.

The fight may hinge on Davis’ legal issues, as he was recently wanted by Maryland police after allegedly violating his probation, conditions that stemmed from the domestic violence accusations that saw his exhibition with Paul cancelled.
