FORMER world cruiserweight title challenger David Light is in hospital having suffered a mild stroke.

The New Zealander 20-1 (12) fought champion Lawrence Okolie at the Manchester Arena on March 25 and went the 12-round distance but was beaten on points.

He returned to New Zealand on April 1 but visited hospital four days later and received a CT scan after reportedly feeling unwell.

“There were small signs,” his trainer Isaac Peach told stuff.co.nz.

“So, he went straight in [to hospital] and got those check-ups and got cleared for concussion.”

Light was then hospitalised on April 17 suffering from concussion symptoms. A blood clot was discovered after a second scan. He has since undergone surgery for a “clot retrieval” and is now recovering at Waitakere Hospital in Auckland. Peach says Light is getting better every day.

“[He’s] awake and fine in that sense,” he said.

“What David needs now is support. David’s doing real good, David’s laughing. We’re trying to keep him upbeat. That’s what we are doing. We’re trying to keep it as normal as possible.”

Everyone at Boxing News wishes David a speedy and successful recovery.
