DAVID HAYE was today fined £25,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control as punishment for his behaviour and comments surrounding his grudge match with Tony Bellew back in March.
The former two-weight king was stopped in the 11th round after rupturing his Achilles tendon halfway through the fight.
Prior to the contest, Haye punched Bellew at a press conference and made frequent vows to end the Liverpudlian’s career and leave him hospitalised.
“Mr. Haye admitted that his behaviour amounted to misconduct and brought boxing into disrepute,” a statement from the BBBofC read.
Haye recently split with trainer Shane McGuigan but insists he is still on course to return to action before the end of the year, having had surgery on his injured ankle.
Bellew’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, feels a rematch with ‘The Bomber’ is the only fight that makes sense for Haye. Bellew is open to a return, but only if the terms of the first fight are reversed in his favour.
“I can’t even lie and tell you it’s water under the bridge because it’s not, I think he’s an arsehole,” he told us earlier this year, with regards to Haye’s pre-fight comments.
“I think he was wrong for saying the things he said. I could’ve forgiven him if he came out after the fight and said that he’d said things just to get a reaction out of me but he hasn’t, he’s come out and said he actually meant every single word he said. That disgusted me even more.
“It’s all done with now and the only person who went to hospital that night was that clown. Funny how it all works out.”
Bellew’s next move is still being decided, but a rematch with Haye seems the most likely option especially after we revealed WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker is set to fight Hughie Fury in September.
