KAL YAFAI made weight Friday, coming in at 114.8lbs, as he prepares to defend his WBA super-flyweight title on Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

David Carmona will not be able to win the world title. He weighed in massively over the weight limit, more than three pounds too heavy. He scaled 118.6lbs.

That puts Yafai at a significant disadvantage in his first professional fight in America. He declared on social media, “Felt great weighing in today. Absolute joke how he came in so much over the weight. I’m ready to defend my title in style. Thank you all for all the support.”

Yafai is the superior boxer but Carmona has gone the distance with elite fighters like Carlos Cuadras and Naoya Inoue. Carmona impressively went 12 rounds with Inoue. Only yesterday Inoue was destroying Jamie McDonnell, one of Kal’s sparring partners, inside a round at bantamweight. Yafai is still expected to win, but the task, with all those extra pounds for Mexico’s Carmona, has suddenly got harder.

On the same bill IBF super-flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas boxes Jonas Sultan, both of whom made weight. Ancajas was 114¾lbs, Sultan 114¼lbs.
