JUST when it looked like Danny Jacobs was in for a long wait until his return to the top tier, suddenly he finds himself perfectly placed for either a lucrative showdown with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez or another world title fight.

Canelo Alvarez wants to return to action in September, after serving a six-month drug ban. Negotiations to reschedule his rematch with Gennady Golovkin have stalled and so Canelo’s team have turned their attentions to Jacobs, approaching the American with the fight.

“They’ve made us an offer,” Eddie Hearn, Jacobs’ promoter said. “Whether it’s an offer to try and force Golovkin to take the fight I don’t know, but we’re up for that fight.”

The IBF have stripped Golovkin of their world title, after the Kazakh failed to agree to face that body’s mandatory challenger Sergey Derevyanchenko. Jacobs is ranked highly with the IBF so he will also have the option of fighting the Ukrainian for the vacant belt. Jacobs knows Derevyanchenko well too, they sparred when the American was preparing to fight Golovkin himself.

“Golovkin got stripped of that title last night so Sergey Derevyanchenko has been ordered to fight Danny Jacobs for the IBF title, so Jacobs is either fighting Canelo or Derevyanchenko,” Hearn said.

If he chooses Canelo that fight would be on September 15. If it’s Derevyanchenko for the IBF belt, that could take place in October.
