Danny Garcia has discussed the possibility of a clash between Jaron Ennis and Terence Crawford after ‘Boots’ overcame Xander Zayas on Saturday.
Ennis became a two-weight world champion thanks to a seventh round stoppage win over Xayas at the Barclays Center in New York, earning the WBA and WBO belts at super-welterweight after a highly-entertaining battle.
‘Boots’ recorded several knockdowns throughout the contest, but had to come through some difficult moments himself, as he extended his unbeaten record to 36-0 with 32 knockouts.
One man that Ennis has been compared to throughout his career is five-weight world champion Crawford, who like ‘Boots’ also reigned at welterweight and super-welterweight, with the success at 147lbs resulting in him earning undisputed status.
After Crawford became undisputed, there was the option to take on mandatory challenger Ennis, but he instead opted to move up in weight, despite the best efforts from ‘Boots’ to make the fight.
Crawford retired from the sport last year, but after Ennis defeated Zayas, there has again been discussion amongst fans over a potential fight, with ‘Bud’ already appearing to make his stance clear after sharing his reaction following the fight.
Two-division world champion Garcia has now chimed in with his view whilst speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, first suggesting that he doesn’t believe Crawford would come out of retirement.
“I don’t know. I doubt it. Crawford’s Crawford.”
If he was step back through the ropes though, Garcia admitted he would be extremely excited about the prospect of a battle against Ennis.
“That’s a great fight. Young hungry lion vs the master. The OG master.”
For now, it appears that Ennis will look to claim the remaining belts at 154lbs, or perhaps target a battle against fellow star Vergil Ortiz.
