THE opponent for Danny Garcia’s next fight has been revealed. The WBC welterweight champion will not have his world title on the line, which he won in January and is yet to defend, when he boxes in his Philadelphia hometown on November 12. Garcia will box Samuel Vargas in a non-title 10-round bout at Temple University’s Liacouras Center.
Vargas, who lost to Errol Spence in four rounds last year, has a 25-2-1 (13) record.
Garcia is a spotless 32-0 (18), but his best wins are feeling increasingly distant. He beat Amir Khan in 2012, outboxed Lucas Matthysse in 2013 and while his last three fights saw him box well known names in Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero, there are big fights that are still to be made at welterweight for Garcia.
This will be the first time in six years that Garcia has fought in his home city, Philadelphia. Samuel Vargas is expected to be tune-up before Garcia fights WBA champion Keith Thurman in the first quarter of 2017.
