Daniel Dubois may be on the verge of securing his comeback opponent.
The big-punching Brit lost his IBF Heavyweight World title via stoppage against Oleksandr Usyk last year, his second attempt at beating the Ukrainian. Before that, however, Dubois was on a run of form perhaps unrivalled in the division, beating Jarrell Miller, FIlip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua all inside the distance.
Having teamed back up with trainer Don Charles following a brief split, 28-year-old from London is now solely focused on becoming a two-time titleholder in the division, and he may get his shot sooner than expected.
Speaking on Instagram off the back of reports that he could face countryman and WBO champ Fabio Wardley next, Dubois urged Wardley the fight over the line.
“Let’s go Fabio Wardley. Sign the contract, let’s get it on.”
Over on X, manager Sam Jones expressed the same sentiment.
“We are ready to go it’s over to Fabio and his team. But we are good to go What a fight for the fans this will be.”
Wardley was upgraded from interim to full champion following a career-best win over Joseph Parker last year. He has made it clear that he is looking to face the very best, and wants to prove his worth as a champion inside the ropes. A first defence against Dubois, even despite some inactivity and coming off a defeat, is a dangerous one.
Promoter Frank Warren, who represents both men, is targeting a return for each man in late April or May. Whether or not they will face looking across the ring at one another remains to be seen.
