Cuba sweep into the American Confederation Boxing Championships

CUBA swept into the American Confederation Boxing Championships with their customary aplomb, winning all their bouts so far in Venezuela.

Welterweight Roniel Iglesias, a 2012 Olympic gold medallist, beat Guyana’s Lester Martinez Tut, winning every round for all three judges. Top lightweight Lazaro Alvarez defeat Dominica’s Elvis Rodriguez by the same scores.

Classy light-heavyweight Julio La Cruz outpointed Carlos Mina, winning unanimously.

In a flyweight quarter-final Yosbany Veitia beat Dominica’s Leonel de los Santos Nunez on a split decision. Cuban 91&kgs Lenier Pero beat Brazil’s Rafael Duarte Lima unanimously.

American 52kgs Brent Venegas lost unanimously to Colombia’s Ceiber Avila Segura. Host nation welterweight Gabriel Maestre Perez outscored the USA’s Brian Ceballo also by unanimous decision. Steve Nelson, US light-heavy, also lost to his Venezuelan counterpart, a unanimous decision going to Albert Ramirez Duran. As indeed did super-heavyweight Cam Awesome, with Edgar Munoz Mata getting a split decision over him. Venezuala’s Jose Diaz Azocar eliminated US bantamweight Francisco Martinez on a split decision.

American heavyweight Joshua Temple took matters into his own hands, halting Nicaragua’s Alvaro Mendoza. At middleweight the USA’s Anthony Campbell took a unanimous victory over Argentine Christian Zarate.

Robson Conceicao, a Brazilian lightweight to look out for, beat Mexico’s Lindolfo Garza.
