Terence Crawford believes Jaron Ennis will come up short against one of his super-welterweight rivals.
Crawford had a brief spell at 154lbs back in 2024, defeating Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision to win the WBA title in what would turn out to be his only fight in that division.
Fast-forward two years and now Ennis is one of the biggest names in the division, after the former unified welterweight champion moved up in weight and stopped Uisma Lima inside one round back in October.
It seemed that would lead to a clash against Vergil Ortiz, but after failed negotiations, ‘Boots’ has landed himself another stellar match-up, after it was confirmed that he will challenge WBA and WBO super-welterweight champion Xander Zayas in New York on June 27.
One of the other title-holders at 154lbs is WBC champion Sebastian Fundora, who retained his belt with a sixth round stoppage win over Keith Thurman on Saturday.
Crawford appears to be impressed with what he’s seen from Fundora, after ‘Bud’ was asked on social media who would come out on top between the 6ft 5in champion and Ennis.
“Fundora.”
Crawford then revealed if he sees anybody at 154lbs being able to beat Fundora.
“Right now, no.”
Fundora did lose at 154lbs back in April 2023 when he was stopped by Brian Mendoza, but since then he has kicked on and become a real force at super-welterweight, notably claiming two wins over Tim Tszyu.
His huge height advantage over his opponents makes him a major threat to anybody, and if Ennis is able to overcome Zayas this summer, a further unification against Fundora would certainly be an interesting spectacle.
