RENOWNED fight figure Frank Hopkins has died, leaving a strong boxing legacy behind. Head of Queensberry Promotions, Frank Warren, tweeted out his condolences today, confirming that Hopkins, who had recently been unwell, had indeed passed away.
“Everyone at Queensberry are saddened to learn of the passing of Frank Hopkins. A top man who worked with many of our fighters across the years. Condolences to his family and friends for their loss. Rest in Peace Frank”.
Based in Emsworth, Hampshire, Hopkins worked with hundreds of fighters across his esteemed career, becoming a regular face in high-profile corners. There are few active fighters more high-profile than Tyson Fury and Hopkins worked the corner for Fury’s knockout win over Dillian Whyte in Wembley Stadium.
Building his reputation as a stellar cutman, Hopkins was a key figure during the development and career achievements of Portsmouth favourite Tony Oakey. Reigning as WBU light-heavyweight champion, Oakey was Hopkins’ nephew.
Frank would eventually work the corner for dozens of world title fights, travelling the world, with numerous trips to America. Always approachable and humble, Hopkins later explained to local media how fortunate he was to be a part of so many big events.
Everyone at Boxing News extends their heartfelt condolences to the Hopkins family at this time.
