Conor Benn seems intent on making a fight with Shakur Stevenson happen if the right terms can be agreed.
Stevenson became the sport’s quickest four-weight world champion this past weekend in New York, whitewashing Teofimo Lopez in a career-best performance.
Benn, who is coming off the back of a victory against Chris Eubank Jr at middleweight, stepped through the ropes post-fight when he was called out by the new champion. Stevenson said he would be willing to make the fight at welterweight with a rehydration clause.
Benn then reportedly told the media that he would not accept the stipulation of weighing just 10lbs more than the 147 limit on the morning of the fight, despite it being the same condition Eubank Jr was subject to in their two fights.
However, in a clip shared by State of Boxing, Benn changed his tune on the clause, saying he would agree but demanding sufficient financial compensation for taking it on. He also said he feels that Wembley Stadium should play host.
“Hey Shakur, Wembley, locked in. Be ready. You want the rehydration clause, you gotta pay. I’ll still smash your arse. First fight down at 147 in three years and I’ll still give it to ya.”
This clears the path for the fight to take place, though it is worth noting that Benn is also currently publicly targetting WBA Welterweight World Champion Rolando Romero and the winner of WBC titleholder Mario Barrios’ upcoming defence against Ryan Garcia. Promoter Eddie Hearn has said he would like to see his charge in a world title fight next.
