BELFAST promoter Mark Dunlop will stage an EBU ‘Silver’ title fight at the close of the summer for his featherweight hope Colm Murphy. While Dunlop has a strong history of packing out the Ulster Hall with local crowd pleasers, this show will land in the Girdwood Community Hub, North Belfast.
Murphy will take on Surrey’s Luke Pearson for the vacant crown on August 2, according to email communication sent from the European Boxing Union offices in Rome earlier this week. Murphy was last seen boxing on the ‘Nations Fight Night’ show, televised by the BBC.
That card ended in tragic circumstances as Galway fighter John Cooney sadly died from injuries sustained in his headline bout with Welshman Nathan Howells. Earlier in the evening, ‘Posh Boy’ Murphy improved to 14-0 (5 KOs) with a third-round stoppage of Kasimu Hamad Haji.
The oft-beaten Tanzanian was fair game for an early stoppage, but Pearson, 10-0, should present a sterner examination of Murphy’s credentials over 12 rounds. Pearson has only beaten one opponent with a winning record and holds zero knockouts on the slate, so he will need to be in shape to box for the full 36 minutes.
The show is all set to welcome a return to UK shores for Kalliopi Kourouni, aka ‘Pink Tyson’, who boxed on some Hennessy cards previously. Dungannon lightweight prospect Charles McDonagh will also feature.
