Chris Jenkins puts rough patch behind him to prepare for Tyrone Nurse

CHRIS JENKINS is looking to put a difficult spell behind him when he faces Tyrone Nurse for the vacant British light-welterweight title on July 18 in Manchester.

By the time he fights, the Welshman will have been inactive for almost 10 months after cancellations and a stomach virus which scuppered his original date with Nurse in April.

The unbeaten 26-year-old is yet to fight a full 12 rounds but is confident he has the ability to prevail and become British champion.

“I got ill on the Wednesday before we were due to fight in April. We’ve got twin boys aged three and they’re always picking up bugs, so I caught a stomach virus,” he told Boxing News.

“Tyrone had that fight, a break, then regrouped. He’s done 12 rounds twice, I’ve done 10 once but I know I’m fit enough for 12.

“He’s slick but some things let his boxing down and I hope to show them on Saturday night. I’d like to win the British title and then defend it a few times so I can hand it down to my children.”

Nurse, who lost out on the Commonwealth title against Dave Ryan last year, is more experienced than his adversary, despite being a year younger.

He is aware of the threat Jenkins poses, but is looking to make up for the loss to Ryan and open the door to bigger fights.

“He’s a very good all-round fighter, a decent boxer on the outside who whips in those double left hooks on the inside too,” he said.

“This fight should be a bit more tactical, he’s a boxer-fighter rather than a brawler, but it could get exciting in the end. For the Dave Ryan loss I f***** up, made mistakes, but you live and learn.”
