Chris Eubank Jr makes financial gesture from cancelled Conor Benn bout

CHRIS Eubank Jr has shelled out a wedge of cash to cover the expenses of undercard fighters who missed out when the first Eubank-Benn clash was canned in 2022.

The pair were all set to throw down at a catchweight in the o2 Arena when the show was dramatically cancelled after Conor Benn tested positive for banned substances.

Not only was the main event dropped that evening, but a host of undercard fighters also missed out on their opportunities. Chris Eubank Jr raised this very issue at one of the recent press conferences publicising his rescheduled bash with Benn on April 26 in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Revealing his plans in a calculated, chin-stroking manner, Eubank Jr vowed to divvy up £50,000 from his fight purse and redistribute it to the fighters who missed out. Now, he has followed up on that promise.

After my first scheduled bout with @ConorNigel got cancelled… @EddieHearn & @MatchroomBoxing never compensated anyone for their training camps, which never sat well with me. So here’s a little something to help out the undercard fighters that were left out of pocket. {few boxers… pic.twitter.com/DD3QMKixW5

Despite this good deed from Eubank Jr, some sceptical voices on Twitter/X have accused the Brighton boxer, 35, of virtue signalling, asking why he chose to go public with this move instead of doing it privately.

Others have challenged Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn and Benn himself to match Eubank’s activities. At the aforementioned press conference, Hearn did state that all of the boxers under his control were back out swiftly following the cancelled show. Some of the names who have received compensation so far include: Felix Cash, Harlem Eubank, Lyndon Arthur and Ellie Scotney.
