Derek Chisora has had his say on the WBA ‘Super’ title now being on the line for the upcoming Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua showdown.
Fury and Joshua are finally set to do battle at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday 11 December, after being linked to one another for over a decade.
It was recently reported that the pair will also have a world title up for grabs in the bout, with the vacant WBA ‘Super’ belt set to be added to proceedings, giving each man a chance to become a three-time world heavyweight champion.
Fellow heavyweight contender Chisora has now spoken out on the matter, telling The Stomping Ground that he thinks that Fury and Joshua should only be boxing for the British title, rather than world honours.
“Tyson Fury and AJ should fight for the British title, that’s it. Not other belt. The reason I keep saying this is because they’ve both been beaten twice, one nearly got knocked out by Oleksandr [Usyk], and both walked away from the sport.
“One came and boxed a YouTuber, then came back and boxed a guy in Saudi which was a slippery slope. The other came and boxed at Tottenham which was a stinker then had another fight in Thailand which was a stinker.
“I don’t get it, they’ve both lost to a real champion and then suddenly we should give them a WBA Super title, for what reason? Because they’ve sold out a stadium? That’s not fair, fight for the British title.”
Chisora’s concerns affect his own situation, as he is set now to fight Murat Gassiev in December, who after it was initially believed had been elevated to full WBA champion after Usyk vacated the belt, is now seemingly only in possession of the WBA ‘Regular’ belt.
