Floyd Mayweather may have retired with a perfect 50-0 record but not everybody agrees that should have been the case.
The American’s professional career spanned over two decades from 1996 to 2017, where he became a five-weight world champion from super-featherweight to light-middleweight.
He claimed wins over a number of big names during that time, such as Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez, but another boxing icon has named a fight he believes Mayweather should have lost.
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr is the legendary figure in question, who had a remarkable career of his own, becoming a three-weight world champion and claiming 107 victories from 115 fights.
Speaking to FightHype, Chavez claimed there were two fights that he thinks Mayweather incorrectly got his hand raised in.
“I think Jose Luis Castillo beat him, I think Floyd lost the fight. I think he also lost to Oscar De La Hoya by a point. He’s lost two fights and they’ve given them to him.”
Mayweather met Castillo in April 2002 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, earning a unanimous decision win, but as mentioned by Chavez, it was a contentious result that some people believe should have gone the other way.
An immediate rematch between the pair took place eight months later at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, with Mayweather again winning by unanimous decision, this time with it much more widely accepted than their first bout.
After successfully moving through the divisions, Mayweather then fought De La Hoya in May 2007, earning a split decision win to claim the WBC light middleweight title, the only time in his career that a judge has scored a fight in favour of Mayweather’s opponent.
