CHARLIE EDWARDS has secured himself a super-flyweight outing against Salvador Juarez, a relatively little-known Mexican operator, on the undercard of Michael Conlan vs Jack Bateson.
The Wasserman Boxing show, which takes place on September 5, will be staged at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, for what must surely represent a last chance saloon for Conlan, 19-3 (9 KOs).
Joining the Irishman in that regard is Edwards, 20-2 (7 KOs), who, despite attempting to reinvent himself up at bantamweight, has now decided to shave off an extra three pounds.
The unexpected drop in weight follows a largely passive performance against Andrew Cain, a naturally bigger customer, where the former world flyweight champion put his running shoes to good use before losing a split decision in March.
Prior to that, Edwards had dethroned Thomas Essomba to become the European bantamweight champion, claiming his most notable win since a devastating night at the office against Julio Cesar Martinez in 2019.
Back then, the crafty technician suffered a punishing third-round stoppage defeat – shortly after receiving a sickening body shot – before ultimately coming away with a No Contest due to Martinez hitting him while he was down on one knee.
Due to his weight making struggles, though, Edwards later confirmed that, rather than defending his WBC strap at flyweight, he would instead move up and campaign at 118lbs.
But now, with the future of his career perhaps hanging in the balance, the 32-year-old must take care of business against Juarez – who was announced as his next opponent just yesterday – before chasing a far more meaningful fight at 115lbs.
