ALMOST five years after Chantelle Cameron got her hands on the WBC super-lightweight world title, ‘Il Capo’ has been crowned as a two-time champion, following Katie Taylor’s decision to vacate the WBC belt.
Cameron, 21-1 (8 KOs), outpointed Brazil’s Adriana Dos Santos Araujo at a Covid-impacted Marshall Arena back in 2020 to first claim world honours, before victories over Mary McGee and Jessica McCaskill earned her the undisputed title.
In 2023, Cameron famously defended her position as undisputed champion, becoming the first fighter to trump the legendary Taylor, 25-1 (6 KOs). However, just six months later, the tables were turned in the rematch, as the Irishwoman avenged her defeat and dethroned Cameron.
Since then, Cameron has overcome Elhem Mekhaled to become WBC interim champion and defended that strap against both Patricia Berghult and Jessica Camara, whilst Taylor has twice triumphed over pound-for-pound superstar Amanda Serrano.
With Taylor now the clear 3-0 victor in her fabled trilogy with Serrano, speculators suggested that a third fight with Cameron could be on the cards, with the score currently tied at 1-1.
Although, just a few days ago, Taylor informed the WBC of her decision to vacate her title ‘to attend to personal matters’ and was granted the designation of Champion in Recess as a result.
Meanwhile, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman also confirmed that the vacant super-lightweight belt would be contested between Cameron and Derby-based welterweight Sandy Ryan, 8-3-1 (3 KOs).
Yet, it has now been revealed that Cameron has instead been upgraded to full WBC super-lightweight world champion, as revealed by Most Valuable Promotions – whom the 34-year-old signed with back in May.

It is unclear at present whether Ryan pulled out of the scrap for the vacant title or if she remains in the reckoning and will be the challenger for Cameron’s first defence.
