Canelo Alvarez may yet have the opportunity to avenge one of his three career defeats.
Alvarez suffered his first loss when he was trumped by Floyd Mayweather by majority-decision back in 2013, comfortably outboxed in a manner that was not reflected on CJ Ross’ bizarre 114-114 scorecard.
The Guadalajara-born sensation bounced back and developed into a boxing legend, becoming both a four-division world champion and an undisputed super-middleweight champion in the years that followed; not losing again until being outpointed by Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
Canelo returned to 168lbs following that defeat and once again captured all four titles in the division, only to lose them to Terence Crawford last September, but he challenges Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight marble at the end of the month.
Whilst his mind is presumably focussed on taking over the super-middleweight scene for a third time, Bivol has now offered his rival a shot at both vengeance and the unified light-heavyweight world titles, listing Canelo as a possible target in an interview with Inside The Ring.
“I will tell you which fights are big for me now, I think that people will agree with this – this is [Artur] Beterbiev [trilogy], this is Canelo and this is [David] Benavidez. This is the three biggest fights I think for me.”
Like his foe, Bivol also has a bout scheduled before the end of the year, as he is set to defend his three 175lb belts against former Canelo opponent Callum Smith on Saturday, December 12 in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
